Grist Factory, Grist consultant for the public sector
Based in Bordeaux, Grist Factory supports public-sector teams with their Grist projects: scoping, migration, building documents, custom widgets and team training. We also work with non-profit organisations and businesses. Our principle: data before tools.
Our belief: data before tools
Grist Factory grew out of an observation made from inside the public sector. With Grist and La Suite numérique, the set of collaborative tools the French State provides to its civil servants, staff take back control of their data. The teams who do the work understand it better and manage it themselves, all online.
The data still has to be well organised. Interfaces and widgets come afterwards: they are the icing on the cake, not the starting point. So we always work in this order: listening to you, scoping your project, describing your needs in a detailed specification, building it with you in Grist, then training your teams.
What we do
- Your first Grist: moving your spreadsheets over and getting started on grist.numerique.gouv.fr, making each step safe.
- Reworking a Grist document that has become too complex: auditing your document, then restructuring it with you.
- Scoping and the specification: understanding your project with all the departments involved, then describing your needs precisely.
- Custom widgets: add-ons that give Grist the function your department needs.
- Training your teams: in the basics of Grist and in their own documents, until they are self-sufficient.
Open source and digital commons
We develop free, open-source widgets for the Grist community. Publipostage+ and Structure Import / Export are published under the GNU GPL v3 licence; others are in development. You can find them on our Widgets page.
For our clients too, we can develop as open source: code that your IT department can review, that your department keeps, and that other departments can reuse. With the departments we support, we want to help build up digital commons around Grist.
We also answer users' questions on the Grist community forums.

Before we touch your data, we take the time to understand your project as a whole, as fully as possible. This is our condition for starting.
Handing you a detailed specification
At the end of scoping, you have a clear document in hand that serves as the reference for the rest of the project.
Making your migration safe
We anticipate the choices that shape everything that follows, and we train your teams so that they do not carry the migration alone.
Leaving you in control
Your project should not depend on us. Your documents stay in your Grist, with their documentation: your staff, or another provider, can develop them further.
